Though it is very easy to give theoretical pieces of advice on how to overcome depression, it seems impossible when it comes to its practical implementation. The person who has never felt depressed at any point cannot guide you to the right path and therefore, it becomes the imperative to talk about it to a person who can completely comprehend what you are going through.
Bits of advice like ‘try to be happy’ and ‘stay away from negativity‘ can do more of harm than good to you. It is because such sorts of advice are a proof that the adviser could not feel even 1 percent of your plight. Every depressed person is acquainted with these bits of advice but the question remains ‘How?’ In this post, I shall share a few practices which I followed in my gloomy past and came out of it strong.

To be honest, until my mind tasted the meditated feel, this technique sounded very boring to me. Always thought it was a waste of time but once I started practicing it, it was a magical feeling which I had never experienced before. Slowly, I began to find answers to most of my questions. Want to know the best part? It revived my lost feel and made me realize the true meaning of being aware in the present moment. It is the foremost way to overcome depression naturally.

2. Follow compassion
Connecting with the person on the same boat is definitely a pain reliever. Helping others and bringing a smile on the faces of unfortunate people is the best you can bring a smile on your face. Compassion is a gateway to the feeling of contentment, which is one of the best counter-attacks of depression.
3. Listen to upbeat music
Music is the food for the soul. Listening to cheerful music not only uplifts the mood but always keeps you away from thoughts. Once you start thinking less, the depressive thoughts automatically get restricted.
4. Eat healthy to feel healthy
Your mental health is deeply connected to your physical health. Include food high in unsaturated fat like omega3. Have a protein-rich diet and include fibrous food in your diet. Avoid sugary food, junk food, and alcohol. Always remember, alcohol is an elusive stress buster. It actually triggers the thinking mode which leads to depression.

5. Accept yourself the way you are
Do not expect too much out of yourself. You cannot be good at everything. You need to realize quickly that everyone is wired differently and you cannot be the best in every field. Please do not expect an ideal condition out of every situation. It is quite human to fail and commit mistakes. Be kind and gentle to yourself and try to forgive yourself. But yes, learn from it and never repeat those mistakes again.
6. Engage yourself in a productive activity
Idle thinking is a gateway to depression. Distract yourself from thinking and try to engage yourself in any productive activity which requires the involvement of mind. It shall not only keep you distracted but also lead to time-productivity. I can completely understand that it is the phase when you might not have anything to do, or you might not feel to do anything. But in any case, you have to show some initiation, come on, we are talking about overcoming depression.
7. Try to find a motive of your existence/ Find your passion
Ask yourself which is that one thing which you love to do, that one thing which does not tire you but energizes you, that one thing which can daily push you out of your bed. Spend some alone time and ask such questions to yourself. Alone time can be hard on you, so accompany yourself with meditation at that time. Meditation is the path to self-discovery and self-exploration. Once you find a motive to live or you explore your passion, never ignore it. Start working on it. A definite way to overcome depression.
8. Express yourself
It is vital to express your negative emotions in any form. Expressing out negativity is the best way to unburden yourself. It doesn’t matter whether you are an introvert or an extrovert, negative feelings must be expressed out. There are some ways of expressing yourself– talk to somebody, write a journal, go for a quick work-out. I maintain a journal to express out the negativity whenever I feel it.
9. Exercise/Engage in a physical activity
Take out your sneakers and wear it. It doesn’t matter whether you walk, jog, gym, dance, play a sport or involve yourself in any sort of physical activity. It is essential to sweat for at least half an hour, 4 days a week. It evokes a feel-good factor for oneself, which is essential in overcoming depression.
10. Count your blessings
Always appreciate the fact that you are privileged than many out there. Whenever you feel depressed, compare yourself with the ones who are not only underprivileged than you but also deprived of basic necessities for survival -food, water and shelter. You will start feeling bigger and better.
11. Develop self-control
The phase of depression is the phase when you are most likely to get carried away by the materialistic happiness but remember, it is the time when self-control is immensely important. Getting attracted towards the materialistic forces will sink you further and deeper. Better said than done, I know how difficult it is, but you need to start with resisting small temptations initially, which will automatically evoke confidence within you to resist the stronger temptations.
12. Connect with nature
You might be surprised to know that you are surrounded all around by the biggest healer of depression. Yes, nature is the biggest source of positive energy which purifies your body and soul. Patiently, try to spend some time sensing the nature. Allow the sense organs to perform their assigned roles to feel the natural environment, and it shall make you realize how beautiful life is.
13. Let it go
Life is all about peaks and valleys. You cannot be the controller of everything happening around you. Sometimes, life can hit you really hard. But always remember, it is not much you can do about that time. Therefore, you should let it go than to trigger the over-thinking mode.
14. Ask for help
When you are not able to battle it alone, ask for help from the person whom you think can help you in overcoming it. Depression being a sensitive issue, make sure to ask for help from the person on whom you confide your trust.
It is easy to find excuses not to follow these steps but remember, only one reason(overcoming depression) is strong enough to negate all the excuses. I overcame depression naturally implementing the above-mentioned ways and I firmly believe that if I can, so can you. Mark my words, once you overcome depression it, you will realize that life is very much easy-going than you think.
You have to be patient because overcoming depression is not an over-night but a continuous process. You might fail many times but never give up. It is your life which you live only once. Stop dying before you die. However, if the depressing thoughts continue, please consult a doctor before taking medication by yourself.
